Hazards to avoid while dog walking in Chicago

Whether you’re a dog owner or you’re one of the many localdog walkers in Chicago, there are some things you should be cognizant of before you take your pup out for some fresh air. Because you live in a big city, some of the hazards you should avoid while dog walking in Chicago include heavy city traffic, other dogs, the weather and sharp objects. When you avoid some of these things and are aware of the others, you’ll feel better about walking your dog outside. When you are conscious of these walking hazards, you are more likely to keep you and your dog safe when out exercising in the city

When living in a city, dog owners and walkers must be extra careful when it comes to certain hazards outdoors.

Traffic: There are several Chicago dog parks that allow dogs to run around without leashes. While this is a great way to give your city-dwelling dog some much needed exercise, owners and local dog walkers should be aware of surrounding traffic. There are instances when dogs escape from parks or wander into busy streets, and in a city where things are bustling, there is a chance your dog could be hit. When on the streets, always have your dog on a leash, and know the risk you’re taking when you unleash your dog in a city park.

Other dogs: While most dogs love to run around with other pups, a dog walker in Chicago should be aware of surrounding dogs. Your pet may play well with dogs, but there are instances when larger, or more aggressive dogs attack your own. If you feel as though it may be a problem when you’re walking your dog, keep him or her on a leash and be ready to snag them away from a situation if something transpires on your walk.

Weather: If you’re from the Midwest, you’re probably used to snowstorms and large quantities of snow. However, while some bigger dogs have been bred to handle snow, many small dogs are unable to take long walks in snow as their paws become cold and raw. Additionally, it’s not only cold weather that can affect dogs; hot weather can be a threat to dogs and can cause dehydration. Be sure that when you’re walking or employing Chicago dog walkers, you’re near a water fountain where your dog can get some H20 on a hot day. Be aware of heat, and don’t take your dog out for too long on warm days as many breeds can easily get overheated.

Sharp objects: City streets often contain sharp objects such as shattered glass and trash. Be sure you’re walking your dog on a sidewalk or in a park that is clean and free of sharp things. If dogs walk on items that get into their paw pads, it could mean a trip to the veterinarian and that can often cost a lot of money. Keep you and your dog safe by avoiding these types of areas and surfaces.

As a dog walker in Chicago, being aware of these hazards while taking your pup out for a stroll will help keep you and your dog safe and happy.
